Silhouette SD

06.23.10

I am not a gadget girl. In my kitchen I like to have one good knife, (okay, and I also have a mandolin cutter and a food processer I love), but I don’t have the other specialty choppers and slicers. Maybe I’m a little too simple minded to keep track of more than three slicers.

But I could not wait to get my hands on a Silhouette SD. Because it’s not a gadget, it’s the good knife. Just wait, I’ll show you what I mean.
If you’re not familiar with the Silhouette, it’s like your printer, only instead of laying ink on a piece of paper, it cuts shapes out of paper, cardstock, vinyl, and more. I was sent one of these wonderful wonderful machines to sample, and told if I didn’t like it I could send it back, no strings attached. That was very polite of you, Silhouette, but puh-lease, I’m not sending back the Silhouette. And I’m not sending back my first born either. Thank you.

The second I plugged this thing in a world of possibilites opened up to me. (Wahahaha, the world is mine!) I can’t even believe how my head was spinning from the possibilities. So in honor of the Silhouette, I’m having a week-long Silhouette fest. Starting and ending with this giveaway.

Here are ten things you need to know about the Silhouette.

1. My husband was impressed. He was saying things like “Hmm, you can use an SD card if you don’t want to plug it into your computer.” My husband has never, NEVER noticed a craft or art supply in his life.
2. I set this thing up all by myself. I am notoriously bad at installing software. But this I set up in a flash. You can congratulate me. Thank you. But really, it was very easy.

3. You can purchase designs to cut at Silhouette’s online store. One by one if you like. For really cheap. No cartridges are involved. And Silhouette has sales to make things cheaper. And the designs rock. Here’s a Silhouette design I used for a little project I’ll be sharing with you soon.
4. You can draw your own designs right in the software. Check it. The drawing tools are super intuitive. And one of the best buttons for doing it is the “weld shapes” button, which lets you draw two or more shapes and weld them into one.

5. You can turn any image what-so-ever into a design to cut. (I almost hyperventilated when I discovered this.) Just click on the “get outline” button and choose the image from your computer. I decided to put this to the ultimate test and upload silhouettes of my kids and nieces. I could not believe my eyes when I peeled off the vinyl. I was looking at intricate, detailed, accurate little portraits of my own children.
6. You can cut any true type font on your computer. Like I said, the possibilities are endless. Here’s a cake I decorated using an image and font I sized to fit the cake. (Yes, it even decorates cakes. Just place the design, sift sugar over, and remove the paper. Easiest cake decorating ever.)
7. When you get your Silhouette SD, you will immediately fall into a happy oblivion. Don’t plan on doing any laundry or dishes that day. You will start bookmarking all kinds of projects, like glass etching, screen printing, vinyl wall decorating and vinyl iBook decorating, homemade garland, homemade cards that will make everyone think you’re a creative genius, and so so much more.

I wanted my ibook to be as much of a geek as I am. This may be a good time to tell you, Silhouette is deisnged only for PCs right now. A Mac version is expected to come in the fall. In the meantime, there are a couple hacks you can use to run it from your Mac.
It’s possible I got a little carried away.
Here’s a sneak peek at a very fun girlie tutorial I have coming soon.

8. Silhouette has very awesome mediums you can buy on their shop. I worked with their vinyl and it was premium. Oh so smooth with perfect tackiness. I can’t wait to try the heat transfer and make myself a cool tee.
9. You will never, ever have trouble coming up with a customized gift. Do you like how this drink tray turned out for my mom? I made it in a flash. I’ll share full details soon.

10. You will wonder how you ever lived with out it. Kind of like my first born.

To sum up. The Silhouette SD can help you with your homemade gifts, gift wrap, home decor, party decor, your baking, and your DIY fashion. Not bad. Stick around to join in on my week-long Silhouette fest. Tomorrow you’ll hear from Crystal (hooray!), then you can expect three Silhouette tutorials and a giveaway winner announced on Wednesday. It’s going to be fun.

I hope you’re as excited as I am about all this. I’ll leave you with a little more eye candy from the amazing crafters at Silhouette.te Stop their site to see more. Good luck!

WOW, I love this machine already. I really would like to use it to make cutouts and such for the decorations for my upcoming wedding. I’m thinking some silhouettes and names for placecards at the rehearsal dinner, for starters. And I know that the silhouette would be well-loved and used for homemade gifts, my favorite kind!

Wow! I would LOVE a Silhouette! :) I’d pretty much use it for everything – vinyl, heat transfer, glass etching, card making, scrapbooking. I am loving the silhouettes right now though! They’d be first on my list. Thanks!

Reply

Stefany June 23, 2010 at 8:49 am

That would be amazing! I would totally use it to try the glass etching and to make super fun paper garland for parties!

Reply

Sally June 23, 2010 at 8:50 am

The questions is what wouldn’t i make. Of course, I would use it for my cards, but I might move into heat transfer for kids t-shirts and I have always tried to do etching with little success, maybe this would help. Thanks for the opportunity!

Joanna June 23, 2010 at 8:52 am

I couldn’t find the dessert table one in particular, but that is my fave! Next would be the bunting. :)

Reply

Tambryn June 23, 2010 at 8:54 am

This would save hours of cutting out custom shapes! I love giving hand made wedding gifts. What wouldn’t be cooler than a Pyrex dish with your new married name etched onto the bottom, or champagne glasses with your profiles? It’s impossible to make these look neat when you cut everything by hand, but this would make it perfect! I’d love to win this, but if I don’t I definitely have a new item on my Christmas wish list!

Reply

Emily June 23, 2010 at 8:54 am

I would love to use this to make designs to put on handmade candles! Soo many possibilities with this machine!

Reply

I told my husband today I really really really needed one of these. My first project would be something vinyl for our den…over the mantle. And then something in the kitchen…I could go on and on!

Reply

marilyn June 23, 2010 at 8:55 am

Oh wow. I love the glass etching too. My mom made me a casserole pan with my name on it once, but I lost it (sad) and I guarantee it was a lot trickier project than I’d attempt with an x-acto knife. This machine looks super cool.

Oh my gosh- what a fantastically useful thing! I had a hard time deciding on a project- they all are awesome, but I’d have to say t-shirts first.
Thanks for such a great giveaway!

Oh boy… I’m in the middle of planning my DIY wedding… my friends keep telling me I’ll need a crafting intervention! I’m making everything from invitations, to thank-you cards, rsvp cards, buffet signs, photo signs, wedding activities… what couldn’t I do with this machine??? nothing! I could do everything… they also poke fun because I own the bedazzler… what better then a machine that could produce patterns for me to continue on my quest to bedazzle anything in my possesion :)

I LOVE the cupcake cups. I’ve always thought it would be fun to make personalized designs for pretty parties and have been jealous of artists who get to print their patterns on the little cups. It’s such a fun idea, and I could give them away to my friends who love to bake!

P.S. My friend and I really enjoy your blog and have sent some fun little treats back and forth. Emails are great and better than nothing, but you’ve inspired me to take the extra few minutes to send a special little package : ) thanks!

I want a Silhouette now SO bad. Thank you for educating us all about this amazing machine!!

I went to the site and I would use my Silhouette to make custom vinyl wall decor (I especially love the idea of “Welcome” on the front door with a swirl). I would also use it to label my glass casserole dishes and make great wedding gifts by glass etching “Sugar” and “Flour” onto large white glass jars (I got that for my wedding and LOVED it).

Anyway, here’s to hoping!!

I’m really in love with the ability to use this to create etched glass templates. I’m not so steady with the x-acto knife – so my etched projects are pretty much dots and stripes. I would love to easily put someone’s name on a glass/plate/mirror!

I have loads and loads of books, but have always been unhappy with how random the bindings look. I’ve tried to dress the bookcases, but haven’t been very happy with the results. One of the projects on the Silhouette site deals with making custom book bindings and lettering. I think that would be an EXCELLENT project! I could coordinate the bindings on all my books by making custom dust covers. It’d look so awesome!

Reply

I heard about this machine just last week and have been trying to figure out how I could convince my husband that we just can’t live without one, winning one would be the perfect solution. I would make a vinyl sign for my laundry room, maybe it would make me enjoy laundry more – I had been planning to purchase one but making it myself would be so much better! I would also love to try the glass etching!

Fun – fun!! I like the heat transfer projects. I have tried a bit of this with freezer paper stencils, but there is only so much detail you can do with that, so the Silhouette SD would be very cool to have.

Reply

Oh my heavens, AmberLee. I think I would sooo enjoy and love the Silhouette and would use it for a multitude of things. First up, though, would be to design a party ensemble from invite to decorations to party favors — all just for the fun of it and with no particular occasion in mind. How fun!

Sasha June 23, 2010 at 5:12 pm

Oh my, I am absolutely in love with this. If it can cut vector files, all the better. But what I really want to do is use it to cut out papercrafts for me! It’d do such a better job than me, and the fun part is the glueing. It would also be amazing if it came with a scoring point, so you could score, rather than cut.

Reply

Tricia June 23, 2010 at 5:15 pm

I love everything about it, we are teaching the kids now to put their dirty socks in the basket by the stairs (because they walk off) and toys in specific bins, this would help so much to make words and Pictures!!! oh I love love love it…. I am thinking positive thoughts so I win!!

I want me one of these in a baaaaaad way! I bought the XYRON version and the software conflicts with something else on my computer (so I had to remove it), it was confusing to figure out which version of which software to use and it had a hard time cutting paper. I’ve heard of only good things about the Silo SD. I want to cut freezer paper stencils to decoration tote bags with it. I’d also also like to try the heat transfer paper. Plus I’d cut vinyl notes to put on the bathroom mirror to surprise my kids.
My fingers are crossed (so hard I’ve lost feeling in them) that I win.
Thanks for a great give away!

I love all the machines that continue to come out to help us create some amazing things. I went through page after page of the Flickr photos to see what everyone was making – did you see that someone decorated Sterlite drawers? That’s awesome! I’ve got some in my office and they are bland and boring. I’d totally “gussy” them up! I could have used this machine a few months ago to help make invitations or party favors for a bachelorette party this past Saturday. I’ve got a 75th birthday party invite I’ve been trying to design, and the Silhouette and the card designs people have posted have made my ideas look a mess! :)

My boys are way into all super heroes: batman, superman, ironman, plus star wars and indiana jones. With the vinyl or heat transfer I could come up with soo many t-shirt (or other) ideas. Since I can grab images from the web and ‘print’ those, I could make some seriously awesome {original} shirts for less than I could buy them for. I’m crossing my fingers!

After reading your post about the Silhouette and sharing it with him, we’re both sold!!! This is amazing. We’re redoing a room in our house as a bar room and he want’s to do glass etching on pub glasses to make his own personal ones!

My fiance has been making preparations for our wedding before we were engaged. I haven’t been as involved as she’d like me to, but I do recall an idea she had about asking all guests to send a picture of themselves with their RSVPs and incorporating them into lockets as place cards. She gave up when she realized there was no realistic way to do this without spending a fortune on getting the backs of the lockets carved with table numbers… now, with the etching feature of this, I think we’d be able to do it ourselves. I’d love to be able to bring her to this realization.

First thing I would do? Etch my name on my glass dishes. And how cute/awesome of a wedding gift would THAT make?! I think I’d make a whole set- casserole dish, bowl, cake pan….. oooohhhh, I’d have SO MUCH FUN!!

I’ve been eyeing a Silhouette for a while – so many fun options in card making & crafting. My first project would probably be doing something on a shirt for my son, because he always gets a lot less goodies than my daughter!
Thanks for hosting the giveaway!

Wow! There are so many things I would like to make with the Silhouette! The first would be a vinyl saying, like the laundry room or kitchen sayings.

This is so amazing. It does so much and is so verasatile. I must have one of these. I have so much in my head I need to get done. Did you see what it does with rhinestones?????? awesome.

Mary August 8, 2010 at 5:17 am

Because of the internal laser – the Silhouette knows exactly where a preprinted image is located on the page. You can cut out pre-printed gumpaste images that have been printed as an edible image for a cake. I love the scroll designs from the Silhouette website – I would probably choose one of those first.

Oh my..where to begin……I make cards so that would be the first thing I would use it for, then vinyl wall items, then car items, then rhinestones on t-shirts, and purses and whatever else I could find…..I love bling!!! Sure would be nice to win one because my budget doesn’t allow for a purchase right now. I want one of these so much……wonder if my family would mind not eating for a couple of days if I don’t win it????????? :)
