Reader Question: Gifts for the Wedding Party

05.14.10

“Help. I am in the middle of planning a wedding and am trying to think of thank you gifts for the wedding party. We want something each person will like and use but we also want it to fit our budget. Any ideas would be great.” —Melanie

Hi Melanie, and congratulations! I have two words for you, awesome flip-flops. (Okay, maybe that’s three words.) Have you ever owned a pair of Havaianas? They come straight from Brazil, and are buttery soft. You’ll even find some that will fit your flower girls. And for the bridesmaids and matrons of honor, you might throw in a pedi too.

Dear readers, I’m sure you have some great suggestions for wedding party gifts. If you do, please share. Melanie and I would love to hear them.

I gave my bridesmaids monogramed tote bags from LL Bean, and they loved them. I liked that the tote bags were personalized but practical too.

True story: My sis just got married in August. She gifted us bridesmaids Haviana flip flops in a gunmetal-silver color. (So pretty!) They matched our dresses… I was wearing them before the ceremony, and carrying my brand new, never-been-worn, HIGH heels in my hand. My plan was to put them on, last minute. So, on the way over in the limo, I started to put the heels on and SNAP!… The strap that goes around the back of the ankle totally broke in an unfixable way. It was impossible to wear the heels with the broken strap, so I got to wear my Havianas for the entire ceremony, reception, etc. (I loved it because I’m not a heels-kind-of-girl.)

The flip flops idea is a great one!

I had my 3 best friends as my “wedding party” 2 were attendants and the third married us! I gave them sentimental presents.

I had sterling silver bracelets made with our birthstones in crystals. It was inexpensive ($30) and we all wear them a lot.

I also gave each one a handblown glass Christmas ornament. Something to pull out each year and remember us by.

We got an LL Bean zip top tote for a shower present and it’s a GREAT bag. But I know I’d be compelled to buy other stuff for the bridal party to fill up the bag, and then that adds up fast!

We made limoncello, bottled it, and made labels with our names & wedding date on it. I also got some folks gift certificates to Chocri, where they can make their own candy bar: http://www.createmychocolate.com/

I HATE flip flops. I hate the thing between my toes. However, a friend who visited Brazil brought me back a pair. I now own many pairs in all different colors and styles. Havaianas ROCK! They are the most comfy flip flops ever. It’s a great gift, and you can find a pair that matches your color/theme or one that matches their personality. Congrats!

Hi! I recently started a business making handmade rings from buttons and wire! I’ve done two wedding parties – one in March and one coming up this summer. I’ve made each of the bridesmaids a ring, as well as the bride. One wedding included rings that were exactly the same, the other includes rings with the same color of buttons/beads, but all a little different. I’m very open to custom! Let me know if you are interested!

I gave my bridesmaids each a necklace, the beads were pretty reasonably priced. I originally wanted to put the necklaces in nice travel jewelry roll/pouches but ran out of shopping time! Post wedding (now), I’m having photos printed of each bridesmaid with me plus one fun group shot in a frame! cheers
