Give That Man a Hand: A Work of Art

04.23.10

I just loved this story from Vanessa, an expecting mom, and knew you would too.

Leslie Patricelli is my favorite children’s author and illustrator. For last Valentine’s day, Paul contacted Leslie and asked to purchase an original painting from one of her books. The 2 kids in the painting look like my kids and the Teddy Bear in the painting is supposed to be baby #3 on the way! He had it framed and Leslie wrote ‘to Abbi, Jack & baby’ on the mat.”

Paul, you totally rock. This is for you.

If you’re new here, don’t miss the other swoon-worthy stories in this series. I have more great stories on the way, but am looking for more. Here, in particular, are a few I’d love to hear.

1. Mother’s Day stories: Anything special your man or dad did to make the day special? After we all ooh and awe over your story, we might happen to forward it on to our own men, you know, just to get them thinking. A subtle hint never hurt.
2. Stories of something special from your dad. Any special gift or thoughtful thing your dad has done for you or someone else.
3. Wedding proposal stories. I love a good engagement story. I’m hoping to feature one or two, if it involves a gift, all the better.

When I was a baby my Dad bought a small (really it was just a chip as my parents didn’t have a lot of money) diamond solitaire necklace for me that he was going to save and give to me on my 18th birthday. My Dad died in a car accident when I was five years old. I got the necklace a bit early for my high school graduation (I was 17) and it meant the world to me.

If there’s a prize, I would totally win it for best proposal- or perhaps weirdest- I was proposed to on the grave of a dead worm named Fred- yea verily, the worm spoke to my soon to be husband and told him he should ask me. Yup, and I married him anyway.

My 18th birthday fell a three short weeks after I started my freshman year at an out of state college where I didn’t know a soul. I was having hard time adjusting and felt particularly homesick that Friday as I headed from class to my dorm. Upon entering the dorm’s courtyard I was surprised to find, right by the door to my wing, a large, gift-wrapped box with a banner reading “Happy 18th Birthday Laura!” across the front. As I neared, my dad stepped out from inside the box with balloons in one hand, a cake in the other, and a big smile on his face! He took me to dinner and a movies that night and the rest of my family drove down the next day to continue to celebrate. To this day I can’t think about what he did for me without smiling. I am truly lucky to have such a great father.

Gavin and I are both huge Auburn football fans and attend almost every home game. Gavin and I attended the homecoming game against Tulane. After the game, Gavin asked me if I wanted to go on the field. I told him we probably wouldn’t be able to, but he assured me that he knew someone who would let us. Sure enough, when we started to walk down, the security guard let us onto the field. We started to walk to the middle of the field and Gavin began telling me how he was so happy to have met someone with the same passion for Auburn football as him. When we got to the middle of the field, Gavin stopped and turned to look me in the eyes. He then handed me an Auburn football jersey that he has somehow hidden from me throughout the game. As I unfolded the jersey, I noticed that the name on the back was unfamiliar. After a minute, I finally realized what the name on the back said: “MARRY ME!” He had had the jersey name removed and replaced to propose! Then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!

Jon and I had been dating for 5 years, so I knew that we’d be getting engaged pretty soon. It was August and we were both preparing to move overseas (to different places) for a few months. Two weeks before I was scheduled to leave, we went for a walk in the forest preserve near his house. While we were walking, he suggested we visit “our spot,” a tree in a little grove where he’d carved our names a few years prior when I was out of the country (he emailed me a picture while I was gone).

As we neared our spot, I could hear faint music playing. We came around a bend and I saw a table and chairs with decorated for dinner. On my chair was a gift–a picture frame. Jon had framed 59 “Remember when…” memories from our 5 years of dating (we were in the 60th month). He got down on one knee, proposed, and handed me a ribbon that said “Remember when I asked you to marry me.”
