Here are a few surprises for dad that will cost you nothing, or nearly nothing.
1. Learn his fight song. Hold a few rehearsals to teach the kids the fight song from Dad’s alma mater. You get extra points for learning it on an instrument. We’ve also done this with a childhood song for grandpa before.
2. Personalize a box of his favorite cereal with your own illustrations, memories, and inside jokes. Use an online crossword generator to put together a little something for him to puzzle over as he breakfasts. And don’t forget to make a prize to go inside.
3. Wash his car, inside and out. Leave dozens of sticky notes in places so sneaky he’ll be finding them for months.
4. Make a remember-when guessing game. Use magazines and family pictures to cut out pictures of memories you’ve had together over the year. Tape each memory to a note card and spend father’s day morning taking turns pulling out a card and trying to make other family members guess the memory. Or write down one memory each on a popsicle stick and play charades.
5. Film a videotape interview of the kids to watch on father’s day. Ask about the kids’ highs and lows for the year and about memories with dad. We keep pictures of the year handy to jog little memories. We’ve done this 3 years now, and are thinking this year of letting each child be interviewed on-site at a place they enjoyed time with dad.
6. This one is especially for grandpa. Do a little research about his ancestors here and mail it with his Father’s Day card.
