The weather this spring turned from storms and downpours one week to bright warm sunshine the next. All at once there were people outside everywhere, neighbors talking, kids biking, highschoolers walking. It was glorious.
Do you make a summer list? What’s on it? With all the sunshine we decided we could not help ourselves from making plans, so we pulled out a big piece of poster board and a box of crayola markers and had a meeting on the family room carpet. We made our must-do list, whatever style. Everyone had suggestions. And if you can read the list, you will see that my kids and I are major nerds : ) But summer free time is my favorite and I’m even thinking of allowing no lessons at all this summer. Just one big break. Okay maybe swim lessons. And music maybe too. But that is it.
Once we had our list down, it didn’t seem right to roll it up and hide it away until June. And summer is never, ever long enough for me anyway. So we’re calling it our extended summer list, and starting on it now. Today.
It’s spring break here, so yesterday we hit the road with a picnic of cinnamon rolls and strawberries and a playlist full of good books (free great stories here, we just finished Alice in Wonderland) and we are going to see about knocking a thing or two off our list.

I love making lists of fun things! We made paella for my birthday this year, it was delightful… although we’ve already said we have to do it again this summer when we can enjoy the cooking experience a little more!

I see that you have Homemade ice cream on your list. Here are some ideas from our Brownie group about how to make it a whole day of ice cream fun! http://browniesmeet.wordpress.com/2011/01/31/key-to-i-can-party-planner/ Thank you so much for all of your great ideas… it is a bit of a thrill to be able to maybe offer something back that you could use. C
Great list! We made one last year and my goodness the summer is almost here! I suppose that means we are due to work on this summer’s list!
Loving your blog! Can’t believe I’ve never found you before!
I am such a summer activity list person. Just having a list makes me want to check something fun off of it every day. If I don’t have a list, I get lost in the day to day routine of chores, meals and all of the other things that a mom has to do. Is it strange that a list helps me have spontaneity??
I love it! I usually have a must-do list in my head but I’ve always wanted to make a giant poster and get everyone involved. Thanks for the motivation!
I love this! Am going to get my kiddos involved in our summer plans. What fun.
This sounds like my kind of summer! I’m going to have to make a fun list too. :-)
lists are the best thing…I’ve got lots of them :)
just found your site and absolutely love it. Just spent an hour clicking all over and I don’t regret a single minute!!
wow, PaperFlora! Thanks for the sweet comment. You totally made my day!!
So fun! I am a BIG list maker and can’t wait to do this with my family!
Thanks for the inspiration!
I made my summer list last week; on it was ‘catch up on the all the blog posts I missed because of school this year’ because I’ve missed everyone and apparently, missed all the happenings! Congratulations on ticket!!
Love the new look, too, by the way!
Here in the UK, the school year is broken into 3 “terms” and our kids have only just gone back into school after their Easter break, for the 3rd term of the year. The last day of school before summer break will not be until 15th July. And the children will be back in school at the end of the first week in September.
that is a seriously awesome list! we used to do that as kids, and it was so much fun…i might have to bring it back for this summer :)
i have a mental summer to-do list swimming in my head, but it’s always a good thing to write it down to materialize it. love the star gazing and messy, messy art day on your list! + this is the year we have movie night in our backyard too!!
LOVE! Will be doing our own list soon!
Absolutely LOVE this!
(p.s. go Giants!)
My mom did something similiar when I was growing up. She came up with a list of 100 things to do durning the summer for each of my sisters and me. It had things like read a book, play with friends, walk in the rain, eat an ice cream cone to even a few chores thrown in. I don’t think we ever got through all 100 items, but it was fun. My sisters continued that tradition with their kids.
God bless you for not calling this a “bucket list”! LOL Loving your blog…have pinned several things so I don’t lose where I saw them! ;) Thanks so much!
